Comédie lyrique en trois actes de Richard Strauss (1864-1949) sur un livret de Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Créée le 1er juillet 1933 à Dresde.

Richard Strauss se lia d’amitié avec l’écrivain Hugo von Hofmannsthal ils composèrent ensemble six opéras. Arabella sera le dernier ouvrage de cette collaboration, avant le décès du librettiste en 1929. Le lyrisme du Rosenkavalier et l’humour de Die Fledermaus s’y unissent pour composer un vibrant hommage à l’esprit viennois, à l’étroit dans la société figée de 1860. L’histoire d’amour à rebondissem*nts entre une jeune et jolie viennoise désargentée et un gentilhomme campagnard au sein de cette société policée mais décadente, est portée par « une musique éclatante et d’une étonnante douceur ».

La création de l’œuvre eut lieu cinq mois après la prise du pouvoir par Adolf Hitler. Le Semperoper de Dresde avait alors perdu son directeur et chef musical, Fritz Busch, ce dernier ayant décidé de rompre avec l'Allemagne nazie. Clement Krauss assura la première, et ce triomphe amorça une tournée de l’œuvre dans de nombreux opéra européens et internationaux.
