Elden Ring: Tips To Survive The Subterranean Shunning-Grounds (2024)

To become Elden Lord in Elden Ring, players will first have to waddle in the muck of the Royal Capital's rancid underbelly. That place would be the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, a hellhole even when compared to poison swamps or the infamous Blighttown from Dark Souls. It's dark, it's stinky, and it's essentially a giant bathtub of corpses marinating in Dung-Eater's bathwater.RELATED: Elden Ring: Wacky But Practical Armor PiecesIt also serves as an apartheid enclosure for Omens because the Erdtree only wants the gold and shiny stuff on the surface. Therefore, the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds is basically where everything disfigured and cursed is tucked away or shoved under a rug. Hence, one can imagine the denizens of the Leyndell sewers to be angry and deranged. Here's how to survive them in Elden Ring.

Just Run Past The Imps

They're not worth the trouble. They don't Bleed and they can be too hard to hit because of their size and agility. On top of that, their attacks seem to have impeccable hyper-armor and it's hard to interrupt them mid-combo. This underestimation can often result in player deaths. Some of these Fanged Imps also wait in ambush clung to the pipelines and can kill players unexpectedly.

Oh, and they also deal Bleed buildup. If players want to retain what little patience they have left especially after struggling to find this place, then it's best to just ignore all the Imps and run straight for the Underground Roadside Site of Grace. This serves as the most central hub in this Legacy Dungeon.

Use Heavy Weapons Or Attacks

Now, there are enemies that players simply can't just zip through in hopes of evading every attack. The Omens are nasty and tanky bruisers with ranged attacks that can be deceptively difficult to dodge. They also have a good range so trying to rush up ladders to evade them doesn't always work.

Players will have to "git gud" here and thankfully, some tactics are more effective than others. Colossal weapons can stagger or poise-break the Omens in a few hits. Of course, not everyone has a Strength build but spells such as Carian Piercer (charged), Gavel of Haima, or even Rock Sling can deal good poise damage, opening up the Omens for critical attacks.

Some Ashes Of War Will Stun-lock The Omens

For those who don't want to use spells but would like to make the Omen enemies a piece of cake, then some Ashes of War can turn them into child's play. Try experimenting with these Ashes of War to see the most effective:

  • Lion's Claw will always knock them down and poise-break them after two hits (for the Greatsword colossal sword)
  • Giant Hunt also does the same
  • Flame of the Redmanes will poise break in 2-3 hits
  • Glintstone Pebble (Ash of War) has short range but great poise damage

There might be others, but the ones mentioned above are some of the most accessible modular Ashes of War. There are also unique weapons whose non-modular weapon skills can stunlock the Omens:

  • Blasphemous Blade's Taker's Flames can keep knocking them down
  • Eochaid's Dancing Blade from the Marais Executioner's Sword deals high damage and can poise break them with one charged skill

Lobsters Are Weak To Frostbite & Mist Attacks

And then there are those cheating Giant Crayfish/Lobsters who put Siofra River Well snipers to shame and also give Mike Tyson a run for his money. They're not mandatory as they don't block the main paths but some of them guard important items.

There's no other way around them, sadly. However, these waterlogged creatures do have one good weakness: Frostbite. It will not only deplete a good chunk of their HP but will also slow them down, letting players dance around their ridiculous tracking and high-damage attacks. Consequently, their huge size also makes it hard for them to avoid mists be it poison or chilling mists.

Use Rainbow Stones In The Pipe Maze

Once players have dealt with the troublesome enemies, the horrors of the Leyndell sewers just don't stop rearing their ugly heads. The pipeline maze is by far one of the most confusing and troublesome areas in Elden Ring. It's easy to get lost in this place and stumble upon a Revenant or a daddy Spider Hand.

To avoid such incidents of terror, players can utilize a good old boy scout camping or trekking technique, marking the pathways. This is easily done using Rainbow Stones. Players can leave these tones momentarily while traversing the maze so they know if they're just running in circles and can thus easily determine which paths they haven't taken yet.

Try The Beast-Repellent Torch

Some enemies in the pipes are way too chaotic to deal with. Rats, Slugs, or even those Basilisks can easily turn an already nightmarish traversal into a sleep paralysis episode. This need not be the case as there's a Beast-Repellent Torch available from the Merchant in Dragonbarrow in Caelid.

This torch, when wielded, will make the animal enemies think twice about attacking or pursuing the players. Among these enemies are Rats, Slugs, and even Basilisks. It's pretty handy for exploring the pipes at a leisurely pace in order to ferret out any secret or hidden path.

Flowers & Slugs Are Weak Against Fire

Of course, there are some instances when players will have to face their fears and kill enemies blocking the way. The giant flowers and the slugs are some of the most notorious offenders here. In such cases, just kill them with fire so they don't procreate any further.

The Slugs, in particular, are incredibly weak against fire attacks and will likely die after one or two well-specced attacks. Even something as clunky as Flame of the Redmanes can be highly useful when dealing with groups of them. Even a lowly Torch will probably do the job.

The Underground Roadside Is A Good Farming Spot

As always, the most reliable way to survive any dangerous place in Elden Ring is to waltz in there while over-leveled. Players don't need to go too far from the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds for a farming spot, the Underground Roadside is a good place. It's filled with several Omens that can be fought 1v1.

An easy tactic to farm them is to equip Lion's Claw on a Colossal Greatsword and keep using the Ash of War against them until they break poise. After that, it's a matter of switching fast to a Misericorde dagger and stabbing them for critical damage. That or just about any of the other Omen stun-lock method mentioned above will work against these poor Omen punching bags.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
