What is a hotel really? Part 2A hotel is so much more than brick and mortar, and depending on the staff that truly make a hotel, the memory of the experience will either be good or bad and seldom in-between.The service and services provided by a hotel are truly the key to that intangible experience and the memory of that experience that is hospitality, and what a hotel is.When the staff is happy, friendly, knowledgeable, caring, warm, appreciated…family, then the guest will more than likely have a wonderful hotel experience, feel like a member of the family and feel like they are at home away from home. There was a time that a hotel was the heart and soul of the local community, a place where friends gathered or just met, memories made, individuals or groups celebrated, and special moments shared. Now this is not to say that these things do not still occur, it is to say that there was once so much more of it.Communities in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially smaller communities, used to assist the hotel with financing, either by bond or public donations. These hotels were the community’s gathering place.People ate at the lunch counter, had a drink in the lounge, bought and sold items in special spaces, bought newspapers and magazines, went to club meetings, attended weddings, attended funerals, attended political events and speeches, much less travelers spending the night. It was a golden time in a golden location that people went to just because. Many small-town squares and city centers may still have these magical places, these gilded cages of the past, though they may no longer be hotels and more than likely are office buildings, retirement centers or vacant lots, and this is a great example of the difference between what a hotel is and what it is made from.
