Mushroom Sauce FAQs

How do you know when sauteed mushrooms are done?

Cook until the mushrooms and onions are soft and browned.Once they are both soft and browned all over, they are ready. This should only take about 10-12 minutes total.

Do you wash mushrooms before sauteing?

If you are slicing mushrooms yourself, you should wash them before sauteing them. Clean your mushrooms of any excess dirt by gently wiping them with a damp paper towel. If you buy sliced mushrooms, they do not need to be washed before sauteing.

What cream for creamy mushroom sauce?

If you want to make mushroom sauce with cream, heavy cream will make the creamiest mushroom sauce. However, you can also use milk or half-and-half to make a cream sauce, though it will be less rich and thick. Cream sauces using milk are best thickened using a roux.

Can mushroom sauce be reheated?

To reheat mushroom and onion sauce, add it to a pan over low-medium heat on the stove and cook until heated through, stirring as necessary. Alternatively, you can heat it in the microwave, or by cooking it into whichever dish you intend to serve it with.

Mushroom Sauce without Cream Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter
  • White mushrooms
  • Sweet yellow onion
  • Salt and pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce

Worcestershire sauce is the key ingredient to take these sauteed mushrooms and onions and make them something truly incredible. If you want to change the flavor of your mushroom sauce, you can use an alternative ingredient like red wine or even a steak sauce such as A1.

Recipe Tips

  • If the mushrooms and onions soak up too much of the moisture in the pan, add additional Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon at a time to avoid them drying out.
  • Do not replace the sweet yellow onion with white or red. A sweet yellow onion is the perfect onion for this dish - white or red onion will change the flavor completely.
  • I use white mushrooms in this recipe, but I also enjoy using shiitake mushrooms or baby Portobello mushrooms. Use whichever you prefer, just make sure they're sliced to relatively the same size!

Variations

  • Red wine mushrooms and onions: Replace Worcestershire Sauce with equal parts red wine for a slightly sweet alternative that pairs especially well with beef.
  • Mushrooms and onions steak sauce: Replace Worcestershire Sauce with equal parts your favorite steak sauce for an alternative using your favorite flavors!
  • Mushroom bacon and onions: You can make "mushroom bacon" sauce by adding ½ teaspoon liquid smoke to the dish, along with ½ tablespoon maple syrup as a sweetener. Toss the mushrooms in the liquid smoke and maple syrup to evenly coat them, then follow the recipe as instructed, adding the Worcestershire sauce after reducing the heat. The mushrooms should brown and become nice and crispy.
  • Caramelized mushrooms and onions: Cook over medium-high heat. Instead of Worcestershire sauce, use vermouth and 1 Tablespoon sugar. Add the vermouth and the sugar after the mushrooms and onions begin to brown. Be careful when adding alcohol to the dish, as there is a chance of it flaring up. Cook until soft, browned, and caramelized.

What to Serve with Mushrooms and Onions

  • Try serving mushrooms and onions sauce with roasted chicken breasts.
  • Pork chops make a great pairing with mushrooms and onions.
  • Steak is another perfect choice for serving with mushroom sauce, especially steak bites!
  • Burgers are incredible when topped with mushrooms and onions. Use swiss cheese for a great pairing.

Made this sauce and then added to it seared beef cubes. The beef had some good fat, so I lowered the heat and left it absorb all the flavor. Let's just say I made a bomb dish out of this sauce!
