CRANFORD MEMORIAL DAY PARADE MONDAY, MAY 25TH
The Cranford Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to announce its annual Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 25th. The Grand Marshal for this year’s parade is 1st Lieutenant Arthur Snyder a veteran pilot of B26 bombers who participated in 38 combat missions during the Korean War. He has lived in Cranford with his wife, Nancy, for over 50 years. The Snyders have 3 children, all raised in Cranford and graduates of Cranford High School. Line up begins at the Community Center, 220 Walnut
Avenue in Cranford at 8:30am and marching commences at 9:00am ending with a traditional memorial ceremony at Memorial Park on Springfield Avenue between Riverside Drive and Central Avenue at 10 am. In case of inclement weather, services only will be held at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue at 10:00am. PEDAL! PADDLE! EXPLORE!
On Sunday, April 19th, over 120 cyclists participated in Pedal! Paddle! Explore! a family friendly, police escorted 10 mile bike ride through Cranford. The bike ride began at 9 am in the parking lot next to Cervantes of Spain. Walgreens, Hilltop Bicycles and Power Bar each had a tent set-up for this event and offered giveaways to the participants. In addition Fresh Press Juice Company and Strength and Fitness Club were present and interacted with the attendees. Walgreens supplied water and snacks for all riders at each of the three water stops. The cyclists ranging in age from five to sixtyfive plus biked to Nomahegan Park through Kennilworth, down Orange Avenue and back to the starting point. After a ten-minute water stop the bike ride continued another five miles on the south side of Cranford, taking Centennial Avenue and making their way to Hillside Avenue to Crane Parkway through Mohawk Park for the third water stop. After leaving Indian Village the cyclists worked their way to South Union Avenue then back into town, ending back at the starting point. The festivities were ready to start upon the return of the cyclists. The Cranford Canoe Club offered free canoe rentals all day as part of this event. The Cranford Police Department escorted the cyclists on this ten-mile route. Cranford Fire Department had a Fire Truck for the children to tour. Cranford Recreation and Parks Department supplied a balloon maker and face painter for the children to enjoy. Strength and Fitness Club interacted with the children by setting up

physical activities for them to challenge themselves. The Cranford Chamber of Commerce provided the logistical support as well as the sound system for the music. The Cranford First Aid Squad was present for the entire ride. Pedal! Paddle! Explore! is part of the Mayor's Wellness Campaign administered through the Cranford Community Connection. Members of the Cranford Community Connection include the Centennial Village Group, Cranford Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business and Economic Development Office. Cranford has hosted a family friendly bike ride in past years. After a few years hiatus, this bike ride has returned. Project Ready is a free 6 week job readiness and computer skills training class designed for adults who are actively looking for work. Volunteer tutors help students identify skills, write resumes, practice interviewing, and search for jobs. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, are also taught. SAY GOOD BYE “OLD PEPPY”
In spite of the efforts of residents to save the tree “Old Peppy” the Township of Cranford started to cut the tree down the week of April 20th. The Pepperidge tree was over 250 years old and was so iconic that its image is used on the emblem of the Township’s Recreation Department. The effort to save the tree was spearheaded by
Tina Helmstetter. The group, which maintained a Facebook page named Save “Old Peppy,” petitioned the town commissioners for years to consider an alternative to cutting the tree down. A majority vote on March 24, 2015 in favor of cutting the tree down ended the debate. Images of the tree can be found on the Save “Old Peppy” Facebook page.

The Cranford Historical Society held their annual Preservation Award and Pot Luck Dinner at the Hanson House on Sunday, April 12, 2015. The Society presented a Preservation Award to Dreyer Farms for preserving their land and farm structure throughout its 100+ years of farming in Cranford. Dreyer Farms is the only farm in Cranford and Union County. We wish Dreyer Farms continued success for many years to come and we thank them for all the contributions they have made to the Cranford Historical Society.

ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT RAPHAEL'S LIFE HOUSE
On Monday, June 15, 2015 the twelfth Annual Golf Outing to benefit Raphael's Life House will be held at Colonia Country Club. It is a funfilled event including a full breakfast, barbecue dinner with co*cktails, and many exciting raffle prizes and golf contest awards. Raphael's Life House is a rehabilitated and revamped 1883 convent that provides nonsectarian transitional housing for homeless pregnant women between the ages of 18-23, from their seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, to a year after their baby is born. This summer’s co-ed 4’s grass volleyball league is made up of 2 divisions, an “A” division, which will be intermediate-advanced and a “B” division, which will be recreational-intermediate. POLICE OFFICERS TO HONOR FALLEN HEROES IN POLICE UNITY TOUR
Cranford Police officers will once again represent the township’s police force on the upcoming Police Unity Tour bicycle ride to honor the sacrifices of police officers killed in the line of duty. Officers from around the United States will converge on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. on May 12, 2015. Five officers will participate in this year’s ride. Capt. Guy Patterson and Detective Derek Farbanec will be joined for portions of the ride by first year rider, Officer Thomas Officer Joseph Stulpin. Stiansen and Officer Matthew Siessel will provide support for the three riders along their 300 mile trip. They will depart New Jersey on May 9, 2015. The Police Unity Tour was organized in May 1997 by Chief Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department, with the hope of bringing public awareness of Police Officers who died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices. The first event included 18 riders on a four day fund-raising bicycle ride from Florham Park, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Over time, the event has grown to encompass eight chapter organizations consisting of nearly 1800 members nationwide. In addition to officers representing 40 different states, participants have traveled to the event from Australia, Canada, England, India, Israel and Italy. Through obtaining sponsorship and donations, officers participating in the Police

Unity Tour raise funds that are donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). Captain Patterson, Detective Farbanec and Officer Stulpin participated in the May 2014 event which resulted in over 1.9 Million Dollars being donated to the NLEOMF, bringing total donations to the fund since inception to nearly 16 Million Dollars. All five Cranford Officers have committed to raising over $2,000 each through their participation in the tour. With the help of local businesses and organizations they are off to a great start for the 2015 ride. The officers would like to thank Barry O’Donovan and Kilkenny House, G. Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI), with its home at the William Miller Sperry Observatory on the Cranford campus of Union County College (1033 Springfield Ave, Cranford, 07016), since 1967, is one of the largest amateur astronomy clubs in the U.S. Sperry Observatory holds two of the largest telescopes available to the public in the Northeast. The East Dome of the observatory holds a 10-inch F/15 refractor built by AAI members and donated to the college in 1972. The West Dome holds 24-inch F/11 Cassegrain reflector purchased and owned by AAI and installed in 1974. AAI holds a Qualified Observers course for members only where they learn to operate the 24-inch and 10inch telescopes. Members can also learn astrophotography and telescope making. Open free to the public every Friday evening from 7:30-10:30 pm in all weather (although the domes will be closed in inclement weather), AAI hosts a public Astronomy talk at 8:30 pm. ROTARY'S RU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER
How many sides does a cube have? What organ removes waste from the blood? What style of art is Picasso famous for? How many Senators are in the Senate? Fifth graders on the Orange, Red, Yellow, Green and Blue Teams helped their parents answer these and other questions at the “RU Smarter Than A Fifth Grader” event at Orange Avenue School on March 30. Over 200 parents and friends cheered on their favorite students and parents. People in the audience wore their school colors and waved signs for the Orange Team from Orange Avenue School, the Red Team from Livingston Avenue School, the Yellow Team from Hillside Avenue School, the Green Team from Brookside Place School and the Blue Team from Lincoln/Franklin School in Garwood. Bernie Wagenblast served as MC for the third year in a row and kept the evening lively, educational, entertaining and fun. Joe Carney of Cranford Rotary noted that
“This is the sixth year that Cranford Rotary sponsored the event, and for the first time we are joined by co-sponsors TD Bank of Cranford and think d’sign print, also of Cranford.” Sponsors provided prizes for the student participants and door prizes. Mr. Carney added that “for the first time, each school will also receive $200 for a project of their choice.” Students had gone through a preliminary round of testing in order to advance to the final event. The Cranford Chamber of Commerce held its 2nd Luncheon Networking Event of 2015 on April 15th at Homewood Suites by Hilton. This facility, including the lobby and the pool area has recently undergone a total renovation with all rooms being redecorated. More than thirty members and guests attended the event. Guest speaker was Township Administrator Terence Wall. He discussed events that would be taking place in the township in the very near future, some of which included the repair of the train station platform on South Avenue, the North Avenue pedestrian walkway at the train station and the reconstruction of the PSE&G building on South
Avenue. Mr. Wall gave an overview of several of the departments in the municipal building and encouraged those attending the event to feel free to contact him if they needed any assistance or had any questions. These monthly chamber networking events are open to members and all future members. ROADHOUSE CAFÉ BENEFITS MONARCH HOUSING TO AID THE HOMELESS
Salem Roadhouse Café, Union, NJ presented a donation of $775.00 to Monarch Housing Associates, Cranford, NJ, which helps homeless people locate affordable shelter. Monarch operates in all 21 New Jersey counties and has assisted over 3,000 people to find homes. Salem Roadhouse Café is an intimate music venue that showcases the area’s top professional musicians. The Roadhouse raised the donation from its annual Love Notes Jazz Marathon event, held November 8. Twenty-one local musicians donated their time and performed for over four hours, headlined by Carrie Jackson and Stephen Fuller. Past marathons have benefited Haiti Earthquake Relief, Union County YMCA’s
domestic violence programs, Hurricane Sandy Relief, and Monarch Housing. This is the second time the donation went to Monarch. Richard Brown, CEO of Monarch Housing stated, “Since 1990, Monarch Housing has been working to end homelessness in NJ through sound planning, advocacy and partnerships and the creation of housing opportunities for all. Love Notes Jazz Marathon helped us increase awareness that we can and must end homelessness. Partnering with the Salem Roadhouse Cafe is always a joy and pleasure.” Bruce Tangowski is the Director of the Salem Roadhouse Café. He said, “The Roadhouse Café is all about music, art — and charity. The
monthly Roadhouse Café shows raise funds for numerous charities around New Jersey, and we are proud to offer the community a safe, friendly, professional, and fun place to hear music and see local artwork by New Jersey artists.” The Roadhouse Café holds its shows at Townley Presbyterian Church in Union.

UNION COUNTY YOUTH RUGBY HOSTS ENGLISH TEAM
In its first ever international match held on April 4th, the Union County Mudturtle youth rugby team faced Lightcliffe Academy from the United Kingdom at Kehler Stadium in Westfield. Both squads, comprised of boys ages 12 to 16, played a highly spirited match that saw a great example of the rugby community in action. The Mudturtle starters displayed a dominant physical presence that was matched by Lightcliffe’s fantastic ball-handling skills. In the end, American tenacity and toughness won out. The Mudturtles eventually called up their younger players to get them some game experience and balance the match for Lightcliffe. By the final whistle, tries were scored by both sides and the bonds that form the international rugby community were strengthened. Union County dressed and played 32 players for their first international caps. In European sports, a “cap” is a term for a player's appearance in a game at the international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match. The Union County captains were Jack Dabulas (U18), Hunter Musson (U16), Sean MacLaney (U14), and Colin Sullivan (U12). The Lightcliffe Academy awarded the Man of the Match to Union County’s Pat Hak. Earlier on Saturday, the Lightcliffe Academy
coaches, along with their Mudturtle counterparts, led a training session of boys from both programs. This was followed by a walking tour of downtown Westfield with the Lightcliffe Academy players being hosted by the Mudturtle ruggers from all of Union County’s programs. The youths took in the beautiful weather, grabbed a bite to eat and shared some cultural experiences. Aaron Smithson, Lightcliffe Academy, coach and chaperone, provided this sentiment afterwards to his hosts: "I can't thank you enough today for your kindness and hospitality we were shown. It was above and beyond what was expected and I look forward to reciprocating the favour in the future. It is good to know that no matter where you go in the world there is part of the rugby family there to help you out." Union County is one of the leading Under 18 and youth rugby union clubs in New Jersey, and the North East United States. Its youth flag rugby program practices and plays in June and July. The tackle program starts practice in December and play matches in the spring. The tackle program consists of six teams: Boys Under 12, Under 14, Under-6, Under 18A and Under 18B, and Girls Under 18.
